Five Apps Battle Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies

The days when short-drama apps were a fringe curiosity ended some time ago. By Sensor Tower’s count, global in-app revenue for the category reached about $700M in Q1 2025, and 49% of it came from the US. Roughly $2.8–3B was the total for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M by Q1 2026. Anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has encountered at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, www.dramaboxtv.net/series/love-me-when-i-m-gone ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface they appear identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Underneath, they differ on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that change what you pay and where you can watch. Relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026, we put them through six rounds and named a winner in each.

The Big Comparison Grid

The whole field fits on one screen here, before the rounds begin. The prices reflect the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. On market share, the figures are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. The install counts are taken from each app’s Google Play listing. If a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source published the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. Think of the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are

Being the incumbent, ReelShort still carries the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. For 2026, MPA projects $1.05B, after 2025 revenue of $785M. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and commands about 21%. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. Often mistyped as “dreamwave”, DramaWave is the youngest app here, yet it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. GoodShort, for context, has about 6% and sits just outside this lineup. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Price

In this round, the apps look most alike. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave sells a weekly pass at about $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99 is the standout, as it is the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, so a monthly plan at less than half that is the wiser buy for steady viewers. Prices differ by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may differ. The winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Viewing Options

Free viewing is where the marketing gets loud and the details get thin. ReelShort’s own blog says the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Looking for the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying? ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Only third-party guides list DramaBox’s exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, even if the app has free options too. Steer clear of look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Winner: ReelShort, with a clear lead.

Round 4: Where You Can Watch

These apps really part ways over screens. ReelShort streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices, while also covering iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android. DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app, while DramaWave’s verified presence consists of its iOS and Android apps. The ShortMax domain forwards to the ShortTV website, so ShortMax offers web browsing as well. Thanks to an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama plays the trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. The winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama wins the living room.

Round 5: Library Size and Originals

ShortMax is unbeatable on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly relies on AI for more than 80% of its newly released content. When it comes to recognizable hits, ReelShort takes the lead, thanks to The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s answer. My Drama boasts the most interesting pipeline, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, simply on volume.

Round 6: Extras and the Fine Print

This round belongs to DramaWave by a distance. Its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. Anyone who switches between phone and laptop will find ReelShort’s cross-device sync the next most useful perk. The fine print deserves a look too, because it varies more than the prices do. ShortMax’s terms say that refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”; My Drama, for its part, forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Winner: DramaWave, by a distance.

Best For: The Final Verdict

No single short drama app wins every round, so the best choice depends on how you watch. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. On Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. For commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. ShortMax is best for sheer volume, since its claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid. DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, is best for backing the current revenue leader. For free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort wins again, thanks to its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if all five tempt you.
